Their 5G Home Router capable of achieving speeds of 5 gigabits per second. This means that you could download a 100 GB HD movie in less than 4 minutes! In contrast, the 2018 Speedtest showed that current mobile speeds are hovering around 27 megabits per second. 5G technology blows these speeds out of the water and truly will change the way you interact with your phone.
5G technology will also allow seemingly futuristic technology to become a reality within the next decade. Companies have long talked about placing autonomous and self-driving cars on the road. However, current communications technology has limited their deployment. 5G wireless-equipped cars will be able to communicate with one another and the command center with ease. Because of 5G, these cars and transportation companies will also be able to monitor weather in real-time, avoid accidents and slow traffic, and prevent crashes from driver distraction.
What Does 5G Technology Mean for Me?
The major US cell phone carriers, AT&T and Verizon, have announced plans to begin testing 5G wireless service in the US. Sacramento, CA will be the first city test out 3G wireless in the country, with two to four more cities to follow. Widespread release of 5G cell phones will begin in late 2019. Look out for the first large-scale demonstration of these phones at the at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
